Cuba at a Glance: More Than Just Beaches
The lovely palm-fringed beaches of Cuba, such as those at Varadero and on Cayo Largo, are famous throughout the world, and justly so. But the interior of the island also offers a variety of unexpected experiences, from mountainous scenery to marshland and freshwater lagoons. The towns are full of interest, often with well-preserved architecture. Cuba really has two capitals. Havana is monumental and maritime, modern and Colonial, and represents the most European spirit of the country. The second, Santiago, embodies the Caribbean soul of Cuba.
Cuba, the "Pearl of the Antilles," is a captivating island nation that effortlessly blends European charm with the vibrant rhythms of the Caribbean.
While the world swoons over Cuba's legendary beaches – think Varadero, Cayo Largo, and their pristine shores lined with swaying palms – there's so much more to discover.
Venture beyond the coast and you'll encounter a diverse landscape: rugged mountains, mystical marshlands, and serene freshwater lagoons.
And the cities? A feast for the senses! Havana, the pulsating heart of Cuba, is a captivating blend of old and new, where colonial grandeur meets modern energy. Then there's Santiago, the soul of Cuba, bursting with Caribbean passion and a vibrant cultural scene.
For this guide, we've divided the island into five distinct regions, each with its own unique character. So, get ready to explore this captivating island nation – from the bustling cities to the tranquil beaches, Cuba promises an unforgettable adventure.

Discover the Magic of Cuban Tobacco
The tobacco plant (Nicotiana tabacum) grows from small, round, golden seeds. Cuban tobacco seeds are in demand throughout the world, because their quality is considered to be so good. The plant reaches its full height in the three or four months from November to February. Like cigar making, tobacco growing is the result of age-old expertise handed down from generation to generation. Tobacco plants are quite delicate, and need skilful handling. There are two types: Corojo, grown in greenhouses, which has the prettiest leaves, selected for use as wrapper leaves for the cigars, and Criollo, which grows outdoors and provides the other leaves.
Ever wondered what makes a Cuban cigar so special? It's not just the skilled hands that craft them, but the magic that starts right here, in the fields!
Imagine this: tiny, golden seeds, each one a potential masterpiece. These aren't just any seeds, mind you – they're Cuban tobacco seeds, coveted worldwide for their unparalleled quality. From these unassuming beginnings, a delicate dance unfolds.
Over the next few months, under the watchful eyes of experienced growers (whose expertise has been passed down through generations, like a secret handshake!), the tobacco plants reach for the sky. It's a delicate process, these plants, they need the tenderest of care.
Enter the stars of the show: Corojo and Criollo. Corojo, the pampered child, is raised in a greenhouse, resulting in leaves so exquisite they're destined for the cigar's luxurious wrapper. Criollo, the rugged individualist, thrives outdoors, providing the rest of the leaves that contribute to the cigar's unique flavor profile.
So, the next time you savor a Cuban cigar, remember the journey it took – from tiny seed to fragrant masterpiece. And if you're curious to witness this incredible process firsthand, come to Cuba! I, your friendly local guide, will take you on an unforgettable adventure through the heart of this captivating industry. Let's explore the tobacco fields, meet the passionate growers, and perhaps even learn a thing or two about the art of cigar rolling.
